Welcome back to This Week in Indie Games! September is here, and to bring in the new month there is, of course, some great new indie games to be excited for. We’ve got colony building on alien planets, hand-drawn point ‘n’ clicks and more, let’s get into it shall we…

Chants of Sennaar (September 5)

We’ll start with this week in indie games with something that looks right up my street, that being the intriguing Chants of Sennaar, a stealth puzzle game with narrative inspiration from the myth of Babel. You’ll need to polish your language deciphering skills to find your way through a twisting narrative, outwitting Guardians and learning to understand this alien world.

Its gorgeous cel-shaded visual style reminds me of the brilliant Sable, with rich environments packed with colour and fantastic architecture. I love a puzzle game that offers an expansive selection of brainteasers to get lost in, and I can’t wait to see how Chants of Sennaar shapes up with it launches on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox and Steam on September 5th.

Wastelander (September 5)

Launching in Early Access with a slew of features planned in the future, Wastelander is a mini-strategy game all about building up a colony on a remote desert planet. You’ll be tasked with unlocking unique buildings and reactivating powerful relics to protect yourself from destructive storms, with roguelike elements ensuring every game and every colony is different from the last!

Wastelander looks like the perfect Steam Deck game for brief 10/20 minute sessions, and I’m excited to see where this little indie release goes. Looks can sometimes be deceiving, and despite a basic appearance, it certainly seems there’s a lot of depth to explore here. Wastelander arrives on Steam Early Access September 5th.

Enchanted Portals (September 6)

Enchanted Portals classic cartoon aesthetic and side scrolling shoot ’em up gameplay is very reminiscent of Cuphead, and if it is anywhere near the quality of that it is certainly a game to keep an eye on. The 2D shooter tells a story about two rookie magicians, Bobby and Penny who are stuck in between dimensions and need to find a magic book in order to make their way home.

The Cuphead inspiration is evident from even the briefest of glances at Enchanted Portals in action, but replicating the fantastic feel of the former will be no mean feat, let’s see if it can stick the landing! Enchanted Portals releases on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox One & Series, and Steam on September 6th.

TOSS!🍌 (September 7)

From fairy tales to flying monkeys! Toss!🍌 is a great looking virtual reality experience all about going bananas and swinging yourself around jungle-gym obstacle courses as an acrobatic monkey. Prepare to embark on an adventure that will test your agility, timing, and monkey role-playing abilities like never before.

After crash landing on a banana-themed planet, you’ll have to repair your damaged ship, traversing through a series of levels set across 9 different cloudscape environments. Get ready to immerse yourself in this parkour-focused world, collecting bananas and ship parts as you swing from obstacle to obstacle. This looks like the kind of game that will really take advantage of VR and comes to PSVR 2, Meta Quest, and PC on September 7th.

The Many Pieces of Mr. Coo (September 7)

Wow, The Many Pieces of Mr. Coo looks amazing right?! Presenting a surrealist point ‘n’ click adventure with a gorgeous hand drawn visual style, this is the kind of indie game I love to see succeed, and I am hoping Mr. Coo will be able to make a lasting impression in this silly and absurd-looking game.

I feel like this is the perfect game to drift away in during a quiet weekend afternoon, and I for one am intrigued by just how the team at Gammera Nest will innovate on the tried and tested formula that this historical genre has come to be known for. The Many Pieces of Mr. Coo will launch on PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Steam on September 7th.

Fae Farm (September 8)

There always seems to be a new indie farming-sim on the horizon doesn’t there? Fae Farm is ready to offer a new addition to the juggernaut genre of the indie world, with an experience that looks incredibly charming. Taking place in the enchanted world of Azoria, you’ll be tasked with growing your homestead, fostering relationships with a cast of delightful characters, and slowly getting to grips with magic as mysteries unravel in every direction.

Fae Farm offers up to 4 player cooperative play too, so you’ll be able to team up with your pals in order to discover new areas, tame magic creatures and deal with the devious jumbles! Whilst things are mainly on the more wholesome side, there’s still some evil murmurings to deal with, and learning skills and spells will help you succeed in your more risky adventures. Fae Farm comes to Nintendo Switch and Steam on September 8th.

There we go then, another set of six great looking indie games! Stay tuned for more indie content soon, such as my thoughts on Sea of Stars, and Viewfinder, as well as a few more general opinion pieces in the coming weeks.
