Welcome back to This Week in Indie Games! Wow, last week was pretty great right? I’m loving Chants of Sennaar, it’s a lot of fun and looks like it might end up being one of my favourite indies of the year. This week you’ll be playing with your food, 3D platforming is on the cards, and the Saturday Morning Cartoon vibes are maxed out! Let’s check out some great looking indies, all releasing in the next seven days…

Mythforce (September 11)

A 4-player co-op rogue-lite dungeon crawler set in a world of high fantasy and Saturday morning cartoons, MythForce tasks you with the heroic duty of taking ghastly villains, all determined to take you down. Choose your hero and battle through procedurally generated dungeons filled with monsters, traps, and treasure. Collect powerful weapons and abilities to become the ultimate champion of MythForce!

Being able to play online and local alongside friends (or foes) is a great addition, and MythForce looks set to hopefully deliver on the hype that its standout visual style and theme has seen it garner so far. If you’re a fan of dungeon crawlers or Saturday morning cartoons, then MythForce is definitely worth checking out when it launches on Nintendo Switch, Steam, PlayStation and Xbox on September 11th.

Nour: Play with Your Food (September 12)

Serving up ‘an interactive exploration into the aesthetics of food,’ Nour: Play with Your Food is a really bloody weird looking game, right up my street! There’s not really that much going on here, you’ll be given the chance to play with lots of different food from bathtubs of ice cream, to plates of sushi. There’s a fully dynamic soundtrack that reacts to your food-related antics too, which is pretty cool.

Creator TJ Hughes said it best in a PlayStation blog, “We set out to make a game with no goals or objectives, other than experiencing the joy of freely interacting with highly-detailed representations of the delicious food and snacks we enjoy every day.”

Nour: Play with Your Food launches on September 12th, coming to PlayStation and Steam.

Gunbrella (September 13)

No indie list is complete without a Devolver appearance, and their latest release Gunbrella looks as good as you’d expect with a publisher like them supporting it. A noir-punk action-adventure game set in a world dependent on a rapidly diminishing natural resource, Gunbrella tasks you with playing as a gruff woodsman on a quest for revenge, armed only with the titular Gunbrella, a firearm that doubles as an umbrella of course.

Gameplay looks to be a mix of exploration, combat, and platforming, and as a Katana Zero fan, I get a few of those vibes here, and Gunbrella will for sure be on my list to finish before the end of this year. Gunbrella comes to Nintendo Switch and Steam on September 13.

Heretic’s Fork (September 13)

Fancy being the manager of Hell? Heretics Fork is a deck-building/tower-defense game with one goal. Punish sinners by constructing hellish towers capable of keeping the endless hordes of the underworld in check… Seems pretty hellish if you ask me (ha ha), but as a fan of both building decks and towers, I’ll be keeping an eye out for when reviews start popping up.

I’ve got a lot of love for the gritty visual design too, it really sells the theme and setting, and the card system looks pretty detailed from everything I have seen so far. It’s a busy week, but I hope Heretic’s Fork can stand out when it launches on September 13, coming to Steam…

Land Above Sea Below (September 13)

The third September 13 release of the blog, Land Above Sea Below definitely has that Dorfromantik feel to it doesn’t it? Your goal is to build and expand your self-built island as wisely as possible to avoid being washed away by the ever-rising sea levels. Synergies between tile sets are an important part of strategy, and you’ll need to carefully plan your island’s layout in order to maximize its height and prevent it from flooding.

I really like the look of Land Above Sea Below, and at the right price I think it could be a great addition to my Steam Deck library. It launches on Steam, September 13.

Wandering Sword (September 15)

I had chance to play the Wandering Sword demo earlier this year, and I liked it a lot, instantly adding it to my wishlist and awaiting its launch with great enthusiasm. It looks absolutely gorgeous, seriously watch the trailer, and the demo I played was really well put together. Stepping away from traditional JRPG combat, combat takes place on grid and at a moments notice you can switch between real-time/turn-based combat, and trust me, it works surprisingly well.

Wandering Sword’s vast world is one I can’t wait to get my teeth into, I love games that lean heavily into historical inspiration! A world filled with bustling ancient Chinese towns, scenic mountains, picturesque rivers, dangerous lairs, treacherous terrains and more awaits when Wandering Sword launches on Steam, September 15.

Boti: Byteland Overclocked (September 15)

I love a 3D platformer, so I am closing off this weeks list with Boti: Byteland Overclocked, I enjoyed the demo, and I am excited to finally see the full version release. Blending classic 3D platforming with ‘a splash of innovation’ it looks to be ticking every one of my boxes. There just is not enough 3D platformers in the modern gaming space, and Boti: byteland Overclocked’s vibrant, light-hearted aesthetic is really sucking me in and I am so on board to see what it has in store.

Outside of platforming, you’ll be partaking in some rhythm-based segments, magnetic moments and much more. Plus there’s a ton of collectibles to find and, well, collect of course! Stand by for some of my own thoughts on this, I plan to write something on 3D platformers more broadly in the future too… Boti: Byteland Overclocked launches September 15, only on Steam.

That’s a wrap! Seven games this week, and I’m just left wondering when I’ll be able to play them all… I’m currently playing Sea of Stars and Chants of Sennaar, what about you? Stick around for thoughts on these two in the near future!
