Welcome back to This Week in Indie Games! I’ve finally finished Sea of Stars so look forward to my full review coming soon! This week there’s some great looking games on my watchlist, we’ve got Stardew Valley: Horror Edition, real-time card battles, and a RPG set in a nuanced take on modern war. All that, and more, in this weeks list, let’s get started!

Long Gone Days (October 10)

After a long road through Early Access full of updates, improvements and new story chapters, Long Gone Days launches on October 10. A military-RPG set within a modern day theatre of war, Long Gone Days offers a narrative that explores human connection during conflict. There’s lots to get your teeth into here, and the inclusion of language barriers which require you to recruit interpreters is just one of the many ways Long Gone Days pushes the RPG envelope forward.

As with any RPG, the plot, and the events that you’ll take part in, soon become about a much bigger cause than just yourself. Stop an unjust war, and build relationships across borders that will last a lifetime. Long Gone Days comes to PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox, October 10.

Harvest Island (October 10)

It’s not very often you see horror and the world of farming sims come together, TinyBuild’s Graveyard Keeper comes to mind… Harvest Island is aiming to challenge the notion that farming sims have to be cosy, with a exploration driven experience playing out in conjunction with the more relaxing, standard farming activities.

A lot of your time will be spent appeasing the Gods, offering produce, fish and crops in order to reap the rewards, and perhaps stay on their friendly side? The more horror-focused elements are hidden under the surface here for sure, but Harvest Island promises to deliver an experience that is anything but run-of-the-mill.

Harvest Island launches on Steam, October 10.

Bioid (October 11)

Bioid really stands out the first time you see it. With a gorgeous animation style that harkens back to the heyday of classic cartoons, this surrealist black-and-white adventure is probably my pick of the week. All of the action takes place in Owlkin’s Cosmic Library, a location packed with curious artifacts and which acts as the crossroad between all manner of different worlds.

The big bad guy seems to be the mysterious King of Thorns, who apparently is a devourer of civilizations which doesn’t exactly sound great. There’s not too much else to go off of right now, so I guess you’ll have to pick it up to find out more. Bioid launches on Steam, October 11.

River City: Rival Showdown (October 11)

River City: Rival Showdown returns with a brand new lick of paint, adding tighter controls, better backgrounds, and online play! River City’s fate is in your hands, and you’ll have to channel all your beat ’em up bravado if you hope to succeed.

This rerelease of the 2016 3DS version also adds a whole new prequel story to dive into after you finish the main mystery. River City: Rival Showdown kicks and punches its way onto Steam, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch on October 12.

RUNGORE (October 12)

Real time battles and card-based combat doesn’t sound like a combination that would work, but Rungore is certainly trying to do just that. Inspired by indie hits like Slay the Spire and Loop Hero, Rungore has a boat load of features that include “PETS” and “Meta progression that isn’t cringe” amongst others.

The pixel style is neat, and foreground and background elements work well together to present a truly retro feel. There’s a lot of content for an Early Access release, and you can even try out the free demo to get a taste for things should you wish.

Rungore looks right up my street, and comes to Steam Early Access on October 12.

And that’s my week in indie games! Thanks for taking the time to check out some of my picks for the upcoming week. I’m looking forward to sharing my thoughts on Sea of Stars very soon!
